Whole Foods Agriculture Day report
July 31, 2009Report from monthly membership meeting
July 31, 2009Recently, The Leave No Child Inside Central Ohio Collaborative was invited to participate in a meeting about school recess. The Ohio American Academy of Pediatrics became aware of a study by a Cincinnati scholar on the topic of school recess. The researcher presented her findings to the group, which included LNCI representatives, educators and health professionals.
There was a great deal of constructive discussion about the issue of recess being squeezed out of school day or being combined with gym class/phys ed., despite research showing that children need unstructured time during the school day – – both to decompress, and also to have concrete experiences by which they can make sense of the abstract lessons they are learning in the classroom.
We look forward to continuing to work with the OAAP and other partners we met at the meeting to encourage schools to make recess a priority.
