Membership Meeting Highlights – April
April 24, 2009Active Living Policy Research (fwd from Barb Seckler, Active Living Institute)
April 28, 2009Mark Young, Jenny Morgan and Alice Hohl attended a meeting with Ed Roberts, arranged my Mark Young, to discuss the No Child Left Inside legislation.
The meeting, Wednesday, was extremely positive! Mr. Roberts was very receptive to our message, and even shared a couple stories about children being addicted to video games, and related topics.
The goal of the meeting was to have Sen. Sherrod Brown sign on as a co-sponsor of the legislation in the U.S. Senate. We will report back to the group when we have further information, but we were very encouraged by the tone of the meeting.
We expect to participate in future meetings alongside Mark, who represents the Parks and Recreation associations (nationally and in Ohio). We are planning to meet U.S. Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy, and will also try U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi (who voted FOR the measure last fall) and U.S. Senator Voinovich, who has corresponded with us about the bill, and who sits on the committee that must appropriate the funds, even if the bill passes. (To see his letter to us, click here.)
We would also like to have someone from the education field, perhaps from the Ohio Dept. of Education or the Environmental Education Council of Ohio, more directly involved in these meetings.
