Over in the Meadow
Tall grass and wildflowers as far as the eye can see. Every now and again I catch a glimpse of a brightly colored shirt or hear a bit of laughter, but mostly, I just see the movement of the tall grass. Of course, that “movement” is actually the kids, scampering through a beautiful meadow, nets in hand.
Under the guidance of a naturalist, the kids are sweep netting — skimming a net along the tall grass to capture treasures like seeds and insects. One by one, they take the insects out of the net, gently holding them while they attempt to identify them. My son is a bit too young to really use a field guide, but, with the naturalist’s help, my daughter is starting to learn the skill.
I have to admit, I never knew this meadow was here. It’s funny, the things that go undiscovered right in your own community. I’ve lately made a habit of checking the Parks and Recreation Department website each week, and it seems there’s always something new to go see and do outside.
Later, the kids and I will take a walk through the meadow and find a nice place to relax and have a picnic. Over lunch, I’m sure I’ll hear about all the cool insects and wildflowers they found and how they felt like true explorers in a new land. Sure, I’ll do the “mom thing” and do a tick-check when we get home, but it’s well worth it. Small price to pay for the fun, adventure, and learning this magical place has to offer!
Ticked Off
Mosquitoes, ticks, poison ivy, sunburn… the outdoors might seem scary if you dwell on the dangers. The truth is, there’s no reason any of these should keep you inside. Know the facts so nothing gets in the way of your fun! Check out the tips and preventive measures in this week’s “Did You Know” section for keeping your family tick-free, and what to do if you find a little “hitchhiker.”
