Recommendations: Hockhocking Adena Bikeway; and Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, 33 W. Canal St., Nelsonville
Novice cyclists shouldn’t be intimidated by the southeastern Ohio hills: The flat 19-mile path, a former railroad, allows an easy ride from Nelsonville to Athens. “It’s one of the few places you can get the Appalachian scenery without having to go up and down big hills,” Saums said. He suggests cycling in the morning and opting for a train ride in the afternoon.
Every weekend through Oct. 31, trains depart the Nelsonville Depot at noon (for a 14-mile trip to Haydenville) and 2:30 p.m. (for a 22-mile trip to Logan). Reservations are recommended. “If you need to get the heck out of town and decompress for a couple hours,” Saums said, “this is just the perfect place to do it.”
