December Is Celebrate Your Right to the ‘Great Outdoors’ Month
…in support of Human Rights Day, Bill of Rights Day, and Human Rights Week 2010
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: “I Barack Obama…do hereby proclaim December 10, 2010, as Human Rights Day; December 15, 2010, as Bill of Rights Day; and the week beginning December 10, 2010, as Human Rights Week. I call upon the people of the United States to mark these observances with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
In 1946 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which reflects “all beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” “This self evident truth lies at the very heart of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.” Our Bill of Rights further protects certain fundamental values; these rights were delineated to guarantee the peace and the well-being of all.
By 1996 The Children’s Bill of Rights set forth that all adults on earth should honor certain natural rights of children so “that we may help create the very best future for ourselves, and in turn, our own children.” Several major aspects are set forth for children: the right to inherit a better world and influence the future, the right to care and nurturing, the right to leisure and play, the right to life, physical integrity and protection, the right to an education, and the right to a clean environment.
On September 24, 2010, the Ohio Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights was recognized by state and local governments. The Ohio Leave No Child Inside Collaborative evolved into a single voice for the state of Ohio’s movement to uphold children’s right to healthful outdoor play. Leave No Child Inside Northwest Ohio’s Mission Statement reflects this movement’s sense of purpose in supporting children’s rights and human rights: “To promote the well-being of every child and family through the discovery and exploration of the Great Outdoors.”
