September 10, 2009Title: Fall is for Friends, Fellowship & Gardening Field Trip
Location: Bus will leave from The Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau parking lot on The Ohio State University campus (2201 Fred Taylor Drive, 43210).
Description: WHEN: September 28, 2009, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (rain or shine – dress for the weather!)
WHAT: Join former Ohio First Lady Hope Taft and Pam Bennett, OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer State Coordinator on a tour of Schnormeier Gardens; Knox County Career Center Children\’s Garden; and Guy Denny\’s Prairie (see descriptions below).
WHERE: Bus will leave from The Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau parking lot on The Ohio State University campus (2201 Fred Taylor Drive, 43210). Additional parking is in the Bill Davis Stadium parking lot across the street.
COST: Registration fee is $50.00 with a portion going to the Friends of the Ohio Governor\’s Residence and Heritage Garden to support the garden and residence efforts. This covers the bus, lunch, and refreshments.
HOW: Mail registration form (below) and payment by Wednesday, September 23 to Paige Bilotta at the address below.
Tour Stops
9:00-noon – Schnormeier Gardens is a private garden in Gambier, Ohio and is only open to the public for one week of the year. It was selected as one of the top ten favorite Gardens in the world in Arthur Frommer\’s Budget Travel magazine in May 2008. We\’ll see Chinese and Japanese gardens as well as a variety of unusual plants. For more details on this garden, visit: http://schnormeiergardens.org
12:30-lunch in the River Room at the Knox County Career Center includes a choice of soups, salads, and sandwiches, a dessert and beverage. Then we will tour the Knox County Career Center Children\’s Garden inspired by the Michigan State Children\’s garden and maintained by the horticulture students. This enchanting garden has several smaller gardens within and is visited by children of all ages.
2:30-Guy Denney is the former Chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Natural Areas and Preserves and has an incredible prairie. He has taken this former farm land and returned it to a prairie reminiscent of the original Ohio territory of years ago. Guy is a wonderful speaker and storyteller and shares his passion for native plants.
