‘˜Food is Elementary’ Food Educator
Local Food to School Program
LOCATION: Columbus, Ohio
Local Matters is currently looking to hire dynamic, motivated individuals for the position of Food Educators to assist us in implementing ‘˜Food is Elementary’, a healthy food curriculum for kindergarten, first and second grade students. This curriculum was written by Dr. Antonia Demas and teaches children about whole food, nutrition, culture, and healthy living.
This position requires a diverse skill set. The ideal candidate would possess the following skills and personality traits:
‘¢ Familiarity and comfort with food preparation
‘¢ Elementary school or early-childhood education experience; should exhibit strong classroom management skills when working with children
‘¢ Willingness to participate as a member of a 2-person team on a regular to daily basis
‘¢ Reliable transportation
‘¢ Good networking skills
‘¢ Comfort working with diverse ethnic groups
‘¢ Outgoing personality
‘¢ Comfortable making adaptations in a work plan based on the needs of the children
‘¢ Availability to work during the school year (September-June)
Preference will be shown to candidates who have availability for the duration of the 3-year project. This position will require approximately 25-30 hours per week, and will potentially evolve into a full-time position within a year.
Specific responsibilities to include:
‘¢ Teaching children the life skills of basic food preparation through hands-on interactive experiences
‘¢ Educating children about healthy nutrition thru activities such as reading labels
and through learning the basics of the relationship between the food they eat and disease prevention
‘¢ Encouraging children to eat healthy foods via the 28 week lesson plan
‘¢ Inviting families and communities to learn about nutrition and disease prevention by participating in classroom lessons and school events
‘¢ Mentoring teachers, parents, children and the community by continually striving to live and learn more about healthy foods and the connection to our overall wellness.
COMPENSATION $12.00-$15.00 per hour; 4 positions available
