U.S. Forest Service Chief commits $500,000 for More Kids in the Woods projects in 2008’¦
The U.S. Forest Service recently agreed to offer another half million in challenge cost funds to continue More Kids in the Woods’ projects in 2008. By awarding funds for a second year, the Forest Service continues its efforts to improve children’s health, while closing the widening gap between America’s youth and the outdoors. The Chief will soon issue an agency-wide call for proposals requesting Forest Service field units to prepare and submit their project proposals for consideration. Partners that are interested in participating should contact their nearest Forest Service office to discuss potential projects.

Moreover, the Chief presented a challenge to all agency employees, partners, and anyone who cares about the future of forests or of children. The challenge: Take a child to the woods this year. Take a child to some tract of undeveloped land, explore a lakeshore, examine tracks left by some animal, listen for different bird sounds, examine tree leaves ‘¦ share the wonder.
Through these efforts, the Forest Service wants to ensure that every child in America has the opportunity to personally experience the Great Outdoors, whether it is in a remote mountain wilderness or in a spot of nature created and protected in the heart of our cities.
